Series Review: The Great

It’s kind of hard to classify The Great. If I had to pick, I’d say it’s somewhere between comedy and historical fiction.

Loosely based on real people and events, The Great occupies a lot of my last furlough. It focuses on Catherine the Great, married to the Russian Emperor Peter, son of Peter The Great. She’s always dreamed of a great love, and despite an arranged marriage, she has a lot of hope for her fairy tail at the beginning of the series.

Definitely a romantic, it doesn’t take her long to realize that Peter is basically her opposite. He likes sleeping around, drinking, partying, breaking and killing things. And she likes to read and learn, have educated discussions, and wants to find the meaning of her life and make Russia a more educated society as a whole.

We see them as the interact throughout the show, with each other as well as their courtesans, and it really was interesting. I liked the cast, and I liked how a lot of them have their own little stories that we see as we watch. And I don’t know much about Russian history, but I think even someone who wasn’t interested in it in the slightest would have a few laughs watching the show.

The quarentine might be over (for better or worse..), but if you find yourself with some time on your hands and want to watch something that’s truly absurd in the most interesting ways, The Great is the show for you, and it can be found on Hulu!
