So on Saturday this wild thing happened: I played Dungeons and Dragons for the first time. I’ve never really had anything against it, it just wasn’t something that people I knew played. And honestly, it wasn’t something I ever thought I would play.
I started dating my boyfriend in August, and before COVID he played with his friends every Friday for years. I couldn’t help but be a little interested. After all, I’m a sucker for good stories and there’s so much mythology around it! I read a book about it that one of his friends recommended to me, and I was still interested.
A different group of friends from his Friday group were starting a campaign, and I had the option to play. So I decided to, even though I was kind of nervous about the whole thing. They helped me make my character, and Noah got me dice for my birthday.
Even with weeks/months of knowing it was going to happen eventually, it was still kind of overwhelming. There are SO MANY rules, and “roll for initiative” doesn’t exactly tell me which of my dice I’m supposed to be using. Luckily I was with patient people who know the rules really well. I didn’t have to sit there flipping through my players manual for ages, because they’ve played long enough they have most (if not all) of them memorized.
Overall, it was interesting and fun and I’m definitely looking forward to the next session. I might spread the love and try to get some more of my friends to play.
