We came here to work?

On the job training and beyond

Honestly, this past week is kind of a blur, and things are getting a lot less interesting, so I might skip some days or just not say a lot about them. (Specifically the ones where I only had work… I can only describe it so many different ways.)

Anyway. Thursday was Discovery Day! That is essentially Epcot orientation, where we learn all about our park. Like how when it opened, there was a ceremony at the fountain where people poured water from their home countries into it, so there’s water from all over the world in there. Or the less interesting facts like Future World East is blue and FW West is green. Stuff like that. But it was still really fun and cool, and we got to take a boat tour around the World Showcase, which isn’t something that they do very often. After that, I did laundry and then Sarah and I went to Hollywood Studios, which means that I have officially been to all four parks!

I thought that Friday would be my first day of on the job training, and I was very wrong. I guess they just needed people to work, so me and two other College Programmers were scheduled to work in the front greeting, bussing, and handing the condiment islands. It wasn’t the most boring or most interesting thing I’ve ever done, but I did get to meet some cool people! Everyone at Electric Umbrella is really nice, so I’m really excited to get to work there. After work, some of my roommates and I went to the housing event, where we got to get free food and MEET JAFAR! I’m still not entirely over it. It was awesome. Basically, it was great, and then Saturday I went to work and did the same things as Friday. Then, I had Sunday off. I thought I’d go to Epcot and meet more characters, but it actually rained all day. It was actually pretty nice though, and I relaxed and watched Netflix until I decided to go get my self admisission pass and go to Walmart (and Taco Bell) with Shannon and Ashley.

Then there was Monday. My first real day of training. AKA salads and ovens for Electric Umbrella HOH (heart of house) people. It is exactly what it sounds like. We learned how to make the salads and make things in the ovens. Not terribly complicated, but fun because since we aren’t front of house we can talk and joke around and generally amuse ourselves while we do our work. Once again, I love my coworkers. Some of the other CPs and I take the same bus home, so we walked to the bus stop together and talked about musicals and Panic! at the Disco. It’ll be good to work with them this program!

Tuesday was ANOTHER day off. Lots of days off so far, huh? This is mostly because they only have so many trainers, so they have to split us up. Sarah was off as well, so we went to Disney Springs and watched Mary Poppins returns, visited World of Disney and Pin Traders, and then went to Epcot. We had fast passes for Soarin’ and Spaceship Earth, so we started at Soarin’, went to meet Ralph and Venelope, and then headed over to Spaceship Earth. After that we rode Test Track, then wandered over to the World Showcase for food! I bought some strawberry mochi ice cream in Japan, and we ate bratwurst in Germany and then watched IllumiNations! I can add that to my list of firsts, because I hadn’t seen it yet. After that we road Soarin’ again, then Living with the Land, and then Soarin’ for a third time. It’s a super cool ride, so it was definitely worthy of three rides in a day.

Then Wednesday meant more on the job training for me. I was with the same trainer, but the other trainee was someone that I hadn’t met yet, so that was fun. We got to work the hot line (people who put together orders) and then the fryers, and we just generally had fun. My partner was really funny, and I already knew that I liked my trainer, so it was fun to work with them. It was really just work, so there’s not a whole lot more to say about it.

I actually work for the next 8 days as well, so wish me luck. My next update might be late (again), but I’ll try to get it done as soon as possible!
